Who is this written for? This is written for the British Deaf Association.
Target audience: Anyone who will be in London on the dates below who feels they don’t know enough about deaf people or wants to do something to help them. Any age, including children.
Purpose: To persuade people to come to an event in London where they can learn about British Sign Language, meet deaf people and experience something of their lives. It would be advertised in a magazine or newspaper that circulates London.
We all know the feeling.
When our problems are out of anyone’s reach.
For some, silence is the oppressor that drowns out everything and everyone.
Deafness. Living without hearing or being heard.
Only 151,000 people in the UK can speak British Sign Language – just 0.23% of the UK’s population. That means life for a deaf person in a hearing world is full of loneliness and misunderstanding.
Building bridges needs hands. That’s why we made the Secret Sign Challenge in London on 1st, 8th and 15th June 2024.
Challenge your hands to talk! Can you work out the secret message from a bus driver, boss, and cashier* using our BSL guide? Correct answers unlock a café voucher and a BSL conversation booklet.
Look out for our banners at Hyde Park Corner, Marble Arch and Greenwich. Challengers will need £1 to enter (cash or card).
Let’s take the lonely out of silence. Let’s use our hands to welcome them in.
*The staff members in the Challenge are employees of The British Deaf Association and are not actual bus drivers, bosses or cashiers but will be acting the part for the Challenge.
